About the Fell & Rock Climbing Club

The Lake District is a compact mountainous area in the north west of England containing so much and attracting so many with its scenery, culture and huge range of activities. Scattered amongst these fells is a stunning collection of crags with routes for everyone.

The Fell & Rock Climbing Club (FRCC) is one of the oldest and largest (currently over 1100 members) rock climbing and mountaineering clubs in the United Kingdom. Our roots are in rock climbing and fell walking in the Lake District, but activities of our members also encompass fell running, ski-touring and mountaineering worldwide as well as many other diverse outdoor activities.

Meets

There is an extensive meets programme, with meets not just in the Lakes District, but all over the UK and abroad. Members are active all over the world.

FRCC Huts

We have seven huts and cottages – five in the Lakes and two in Scotland. Two also have cottages attached to them for which parties, including children under 13, have booking precedence on certain weekends.

Guidebooks

We have produced all the definitive rock climbing guides to the Lake District since 1922, as well as winter and selected guides, and the recent book – “Nowt but a fleein’ thing” – about the history of climbing on Scafell. Rock climbing is ever evolving and we acknowledge changes in the nature of Lakeland climbing and have funded bolting at locations such as Bramcrag Quarry and other crags in the Lakes.
